Engagement ring?

My boyfriend of 4 years is planning on proposing to me in a few months. One day he wanted to go in Zales and look at rings. The one he kept pushing turned out to be the one he’s hoping to get me.. but to tell you the truth I hate it. It’s a past present future ring, which is fine, but i HATE the cut of the diamonds. Even later on when I tried to convey how much I prefer a certain cut.. his heart is set on getting me that exact ring because he just thinks it’s perfect I guess. And he keeps going on about how the ring will be special because it’s what he chose for me not just what I told him to buy… which I haven’t been pressing the issue… I don’t care what style he buys… it’s just the cut of the diamond I have a preference on. Is there anyway to convince him to consider my opinion without hurting his feelings?

Sit him down quietly and let him know you love that he wants to give you a beautiful ring, then tell him flat out this isn’t one you will love. Ask him to please consider something – anything – in the cut you prefer.

This ring is going to be on your finger for the rest of your life. All you’re asking is that he choose something in a cut you like. I know he’s excited about his choice, but he needs to understand that you’re the one who’s going to wear it and your tastes and preferences need to be considered.

I don’t agree at all with the ‘shut up and be grateful’ school of engagement ring acceptance. Yes, it’s a symbol and not the relationship…but symbols matter. If you hate the symbol chosen and you’re stuck with it forever, that’s not a happy thing. This isn’t a case of it’s not precisely the ring you had in mind, either, or pouting about a lack of carats, but something you actively dislike. What’s more, he’s not listening when you tell him that.

Since he hasn’t got the ring yet, now is the time to let him know squarely that you dislike that ring because the cut of the stones is all wrong for you. Say it flat out while he’s listening. Yes, it’s probably going to hurt his feelings. But he’s been refusing to listen to you since he spotted that ring, and that’s been hurting your feelings. Your feelings matter, too.

I think if my guy had pointed out an engagement ring he wanted to give me and I’d said I prefered something different, he’d have listened to what I said. As it was, it’s a good thing he let me pick it out because he’d never in a million years have chosen what I did and he was thinking about it all backwards from what I was thinking. Once he was assured I really did want that silver frog prince as an engagement ring, he said okay and bought it…at great savings to himself.

The point isn’t that I chose for myself, but that my guy LISTENED when I told him what I wanted. Your guy isn’t listening. He needs to start listening, because communication is important in a marriage and you can’t communicate well without hearing what the other person is saying.

It’s The ‘Diamond’s Cut’ That Counts

A great deal of love, thought and energy will go into the purchase of the ultimate gift…a diamond.

When a diamond is purchased, it is usually for a special occasion or for someone who holds an important place in the purchaser’s life. The most popular reason for a diamond purchase is as an engagement token, but diamonds are perfect as gifts for weddings, anniversaries and the all important Valentine’s Day.

Most people buy on ‘emotion’, the overall look of the piece, whether it is a vintage piece for someone who prefers a more traditional look or a contemporary design.  Generally, one could say that in a purchase such as this the ‘heart rules the head’.  But there is much more to consider when buying your diamond.

The Four C’s

The Four C’s apply to every diamond.  It refers to Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat Weight.   These four considerations will enable you to make an informed choice when it comes to making your purchase.  Here we examine the diamond ‘cut’.

The Cut of a Diamond

Gemologists rate ‘diamond cut’ as the characteristic that is the most important because here is where the beauty and brilliance of the stone will make a particular piece stand above all others.

GIA Diamond Report

The GIA diamond report for your diamond will include the cut grade from Excellent to Poor.  Research to validate these gradings was carried out over a 15 year period with more than 70,000 observations on diamonds.  GIA’s Diamond Cut Grading System assesses the diamond’s levels of Brightness, Fire and Scintillation and the extensive Cut Grading System on a GIA Diamond Report will indicate the essential grading of a cut diamond.

The cut of a stone is the determination of it’s brilliance, it’s light, it’s beauty.  The diamond cut is not a reference to the diamonds shape, but points to the proportions of the stone, the depth, width and uniformity. In a diamond that has not been cut to reflect high quality, light will leak from the sides and bottom of the diamond, whereas with a perfect cut, the light will sparkle clearly from the top. The beauty of a polished diamond is determined by it’s interaction with light.  The way a diamond is cut will result in a complex display of Brightness, the light that reflects from the surface and interior, Fire, the dazzle of colour that is emitted from the diamond and Scintillation, the gleam of light that flashes when the diamond moves.  Together, they result in a diamond that is the epitome of sheer beauty and the finest diamond’s interaction with received  light, will determine it’s excellence.

The diagrams above show the refraction of light is determined by the cut of the diamond.        Notice that the Fine Cut and Ideal Cut reflect the most light through the top of the diamond.

The Table

The size of the table at the top of the diamond determines how much light is released through the top of the diamond.  If a table is 60% of the diameter of the stone then 60% of the light released will be brilliance with the remaining 40% fire or dispersion.

The Crown

The all important Crown should be cut at an angle of 32 – 35 degrees.  This will be the perfect cut.  Under 32 degrees is a spread cut, making the table area too large and the girdle too thin.

The Girdle

The girdle acts as a prevention against the chipping of the edge of the diamond.  The ideal cut is for a diamond to have a medium to slightly thick girdle.  Too thin, and the necessary protection is not present.  Too thick, the cut will take up valuable carat weight.

The Pavilion

The light of a diamond is reflected back to you by the facets of the pavilion.  Light enters the diamond through the table and facets of the crown.  When you look at your diamond, the sparkle comes not just from the top but through the pavilion also.

The accepted pavilion angle of a round diamond is between 40 – 41.5 degrees, the ideal angle being 40.75 degrees.

The perfect pavilion angle of marquise, pear and ovals is 40 degrees, but a range between 39.25 – 40.75 is acceptable.

The perfect angle for emeralds and rectangular cuts is 45.05 degrees, but any cut that lays between 43.3 and 46.8 is acceptable.

If angles are cut incorrectly or not within the accepted range, a dramatic loss of sparkle and light will occur, reducing the beauty and brilliance of what could have been the perfect diamond.

The Six Diamond Cuts

Signature Ideal Cut ~ (www.MyDiamonds.com.au)This is our most brilliant cut and represents approximately the top 1% of diamonds cut for quality and would be the most expensive diamond that is available for purchase. We would recommend this cut of diamond as it is renowned for it’s reflective qualities.  It is cut at the correct depth enabling light to shine through the top of the stone, allowing the sheer brilliance of the diamond to be clearly on view.

Ideal Cut ~ An exquisite and rare cut that is often used for smaller table sizes of diamond. A cut that applies only to round diamonds, it is representative of one of the finest cuts of diamond in the spectrum. Representing approximately the top 3% of diamond quality based on cut, the Ideal Cut reflects most of the light that enters the diamond.

Very Good Cut~ Reflects virtually as much light as the Ideal cut at a lower price.  Represents approximately 15% of diamond quality based on cut.

Good Cut~ A much less expensive cut than a Very Good Cut. Represents the top 25% of diamond quality based on cut.  Reflects most light that enters.

Fair Cut ~  A quality diamond but not as brilliant.  Represents the top 35% of diamond quality based on cut.

Poor Cut ~A grade of diamonds we do not offer. They do not meet the performance standards we require for our clients.

I looked at bluenile, I did look at the James Allen site only 1 came up fitting the criteria and it was 7,800 for a premium cut, with excellent pol/sym in a G/SI1 for 1 and 1/4 ct, the table was 60 on this diamond, depth 61. Stock number 1197324 measurements 7.00×7.04×4.31

GIA certified the GIA certificate can be viewed, it shows the inclusions plotted 2 feathers on the table on the edge and one close to it, there are several crystal inclusions on the table off center to the left. GIA is pretty stringent about there grading and eyeclean on such a faceted round should be eyeclean. However due to the cluster of crystals that area between 9 and 7 oclock could look darker however they are very small. You would definately want to speak to them about it before purchase, and they want you to be happy, otherwise you’ll return it. The really nice thing is that the majority of the diamond is VVS2 clarity

Best tanning lotions?

I went tanning last month to get some color and am stopping tanning until prom time comes around. So far I am using “Luminary” by Designer Skin. I do like it, it smells nice, but I don’t know if all the fancy mumbo-jumbo they’re telling me it has is letting me achieve the kind of tan I would like. I use “Grapetini” by Fiesta Sun, which had a tingle (don’t mind those), but it turned me a reddish-orange for the first 2 hours after tanning and it shows all the spots I missed. Anyways, which tanning lotions do you love or prefer? My dress is yellow and I think a nice, NATURAL dark color would make it look gorgeous. Thanks

I’d stick with the Designer Skin, I just love it. I’m a blond girl with blue eyes, and with very fair skin. I had the hardest time getting any color when I tanned. I got a Designer Kin Paradisio free sample pack in the mail and used it right away at my tanning salon and just fell in love with it. I have the best tan of my life
