Need help shopping for a good-valued engagement ring?

I’m thinking of proposing in the next month or so, and I need help shopping for an engagement ring. My mom says she can give me the diamond that my dad gave her, so the diamond is already there, I’d just need to buy a setting.

They have a lot of good choices and if you don’t like it you can send it back.

BTW- $1,500 is really not that much for a diamond ring.

pink or yellow gold wedding bands?

ok, based on answers to my previous question i think i’m going to get a 1 ct princess cut solitaire in platinum. i would like to pair this with two thin pink or yellow gold wedding bands (one on each side). i would be ok with the bands having pink or yellow diamonds (simulated is ok) pave or channel set into the band. does anyone know where i can find either of these? i’ve tried overstock, tiffany’s, eve’s addiction, qvc, etc. please provide links if possible.

What size generator do I need to run all the equipment for a band to play at our outdoor wedding?

We’re having an outdoor wedding, in a large tent actually. But there is no access to electricity, so we need to rent generators. We want to have a live band, and I’m wondering what size generator we’ll need. Thanks.

You need to know the total load of all of the equipment (in watts), then you need a very quiet generator, sized at about 120% of the total required load.

The extension cords will need to be pretty long, in order to keep the generator far enough away from the band. That means they will need to be at least #12 or #10 AWG UL listed cords (and, they cannot be plugged into each other; extension cords are not listed to be joined together) with the male ground plug not broken off or removed.

Due to the (lack of) grounding requirements for portable generators, you will get a lot of “noise” from this type of set up. The “surging” of the generator may damage any sensitive electronic gear (such as amplifiers and mixing boards); the band may not be willing to risk this.

If the location you are having your reception at has no outdoor electricity available for you to use; see if they will let you pay the local utility company for a temporary drop to a temporary meter (with a sufficient number GFCI protected receptacles – you will probably need a temporary type 3-R panel, also). Have a qualified licensed electrician install the meter pedestal, and make sure that he provides two ground rods at least 6′ apart and at least 8′ long.

It sounds like a lot of trouble to go through, but there won’t be any noise from the generator for the band to compete with, no one will spill gasoline on their tux while refueling the generator, you may also avoid another annoyance – a fire from gasoline spilled on a hot generator, and you won’t have to worry about any damage to the band’s equipment. (You will also enjoy your reception more; and, if you are videotaping it, you will enjoy watching the video much more without that aggravating generator in the background.)

It depends on the size of the diamond and your fiancee’s taste. If you’re getting a 1 carat or more, the yellowish tint may be more noticeable. The band probably doesn’t really matter. I have a princess cut on a white gold band, I think it’s a C color but it’s only 3/4 carat. Look at any imperfections it may have also.

white gold rings?

I bought a white gold ring 3 weeks ago, ive just noticed half of the surface has rubbed away. Im wearing it with a 9 carat gold wedding band. The white gold ring is 9 carat as well. Is there any chance my gold wedding band has damaged the ring? Should i buy a white gold wedding band instead? Is it common to have the rings rubbing together and maybe lifts the white plating off?

Engagement Ring/Wedding Set?

I’m looking to replace my wedding set, and I really don’t know what to get. You ladies out there that are engaged or already married, what kind of ring(s) do you have? And what is your preference? Do you like white gold, yellow gold, or did you just have to have platinum? Do you like the newer or fancier cut stones? Or did you go for the classic round brilliant? Also, for you, when is a diamond too big or too small? What is the perfect carat size/weight? I have a one carat marquise with side stones, that goes with two matching eternity bands. One at the top, and one at the bottom. It’s in yellow gold.

Platinum or titanium are great, especially for durability. Although, I think for bridal jewelry it is always smart to get the metal that goes best with your skin tone. Princess cuts seem to be the most modern style, but I also love emerald cuts for their uniqueness and round cuts for their classic timelessness. While you’re updating, I think you should consider finding a diamond that has more facets than it’s traditional counterpart: i.e. a round brilliant. They do brilliant cuts for many different shapes. Personally, I like a very simple setting and believe that there’s no such thing as a too-big diamond (unless, of course, you are very young or very petite.)

What does a “Plat S” hallmark stamp mean on a men’s ring?

I want to buy a comfort fit band at a pawn shop and I want to make sure I am buying a real platinum band. They say “Plat S was a mark used by one particular company which used an uncommon alloy material.” There are no numbers like 80, 90, 95 to state the platinum %. There is a clad of platinum clad stuff out there and I want to make sure I am not getting ripped off. I researched Platinum hallmarks online and nothing was a match. Feedback is appreciated, otherwise I will call around at different jewelers. Thanks!

I found your question when I was trying to find the answer. I tried different search words and found this answer in a diamond journal:

Plat/S+ is another 950 platinum alloy offered by Hoover & Strong (the remaining ingredients are proprietary). Harder than other traditional platinum alloys, it was developed by the late Steven Kretchmer, who introduced tension-set rings in the USA, under the name SK Platinum.

So it seems it is has just as much platinum as others hallmarked as 950 (or 95% platinum) but the identity of the remaining 5% of the alloy is not given up. I guess people like you and I just really want to know that we are getting our money’s worth… right? Hope it helps

Is it acceptable to have a white gold engagement ring, and a silver wedding band?

The engagement ring would be white gold with 1.5K cushion cut solitaire, and the wedding ring is silver with yellow gold circling the ring.

Silver is a softer metal than white gold so if she plans on wearing the two together, there is a risk of the white gold (which is a yellow gold & other metal alloy) damaging the silver one because the white gold is tougher.

What I would do is get that silver ring for her to wear when she wants to wear just a wedding band…and a white gold band to wear when she wants to wear both her solitaire and her wedding band……many women (me included) have several bands that they switch out depending on where they are going and what they are doing….

..be careful on the silver rings, tho….that touch of gold may be vermeil, a thin coating of gold that always wears off in time….you can achieve the same look with bands that are both white & yellow gold.

As far as mixing metals, why not? Those who poo-poo that are too anal or metal/jewelry snobs…..I have two matching platinium & diamond eternity bands that I often will sandwich one of my solitaires between, even the yellow gold ones, looks sharp IMO.Most white gold today is rhodium plated so it doesn;t even look like real white gold but fine sterling silver-real white gold is a pale gray-silver, not the white mirror brightness natural to sterling silver. It won’t even buff up to that shine typical of silver. So if she occasionally wears the solitaire with the sterling band there won’t be a damage issue…and the rings will look fine together.
