Does anyone know the religion or practices of the Goddess Selene?

My friend is seeking to become initiated into Paganism. She has chosen to look into the following of the Moon Goddess, Selene.
Though I, too, am Pagan, I don’t follow the Greek Pantheon and don’t know much about their cultural practices, worshiping styles or overall religion.

Selene is from the Greek (Hellenic) pantheon.

However, the triple goddess idea of “maiden, mother, crone” is something dreamed up by a poet (Robert Graves IIRC). While some goddesses can be made to fit into that mold, most do not. For one thing, why would a goddess associated with the Moon only be associated with one of its phases? For another, Hekate is NOT a crone; she was always portrayed as a young woman in the myths and religion. Hekate is also a triple goddess all by herself, and not in the “maiden, mother, crone” sense; it has to do with her being Goddess of the Crossroads.

I need advice with multi-player for the Wii version of Call of Duty (World at War).?

A friend of mine just bought three wii guns for this game thinking that she could play split screen. I have since learned that you cannot do split screen, but that there is something called “squad mate co-op”. However, not only can I not figure out how to access this option, but once the game screen comes up only one controller will stay on. Jews – Why Do Some Believe Jews Can’t Have Certain Pets?

There were a couple of questions recently condemning a Jew for owning pet rabbits and mice. There was even an answer from someone claiming to be an authority on Judaism that Jews can’t own non-kosher animals and that stuffed animals of a non-kosher variety should be avoided.

There is no prohibition against a Jew owning a non-kosher animal. Some sects discourage it since they feel that it tend sot lead children to having the wrong attitude towards unkosher animals. However, I know people from various Orthodox sects- including Lubavitch, who own dogs, cats, fish, rabbits etc.

That said, however, there are some sects within the right wing of Orthodox Judaism that discourage having any pets at all! The reasons for this is that there are various prohibitions related to shabbat and other holidays regarding the handling of animals. They argue that we rely on the fact that there is a positive commandment to make sure our pets do not suffer because of our actions and there is a general rule that a positive commandment takes precedence over a negative commandment which does not have a penalty of death from an earthly cour, heavenly court or kares (spiritual excission)- they feel it is wrong to rely on this leniency and to thus avoid the negative prohibition completely- regardless of the nature of the animal being kosher or unkosher.

Even these sects do not have an issue with the owning of unkosher animals for the purpose of livelihood such as on a farm (or in the old days things like mules, donkeys, horses etc to pull carts).

Overall, the vast majority of Orthodox Jews have no issues with pets of any kind, and the few that do not have no issues with ownign unkosher animals for work purposes

An Architectural Echo: Antique Art Deco Engagement Ring

Antique art deco engagements rings take after the architectural design of the period, art deco.  Known for its use of geometric shapes and colors, the architecture of the period stood out for its unique flair.  In the same way, antique art deco engagement rings show an eclectic style.  They emerged from Paris, first introduced at the world’s fair, increasing in popularity through the 1920′s.

Colorful Pieces of Art

Antique art deco engagement rings look like pieces of art.  There is rarely a single stone, or solitaire, ring.  Normally, there is a central stone that is accented with the surrounding, colored gems, so that the entire piece fits together in one pattern.  Part of art deco design is the geometric patterns used, and these are incorporated into the rings.  The designers wanted the rings sleek and modern (for the period of time) and produced settings and bands that were intricate and complimented the gems selected for each piece.

The bands and settings were usually of yellow or white gold, although platinum was also a metal of choice, since it is clear and white and off-sets the colored jewels in the rings nicely.  Since there are multiple stones used in an antique art deco engagement ring, the bands are normally not at thin as other eras, in order to hold the multiple stones as well as keep the band in place on the finger to best show off its design.

Making a Choice

Antique art deco engagement rings are beautiful, colorful and artistic.  They are an excellent choice for a lifetime commitment.  However, there are some important things to think about when contemplating art deco rings.

First, since there are multiple stones in the setting, and the stones are colorful, it is wise to think about wearing the band with any outfit on any occasion.  If the bride likes to match her jewelry with the outfit, then an art deco ring isn’t always the best choice, since the colors in the rings don’t always match the outfit or occasion.

Another important aspect of the antique art deco engagement ring is that it is difficult to clean.  Since the emphasis was placed on the artistic design, sometimes the antique engagement ring mounting doesn’t hold up as well during cleaning.  In addition, it is difficult to clean between the multiple stones, being careful not to damage the mounting or settings, so a professional jeweler is often needed to do a thorough cleaning.

should I sand before I paint?

I have a cherry wood coffee table that I am wanting to paint black to match the rest of the room. It has some kind of shine to it but I don’t know what it is because it does have knicks and scraps as well as a ring from a finger nail polish remover bottle. I don’t know whether to sand it or not or what kind of paint to use. Can someone help me? I’m also doing to end tables as well. One cherry and one just standard wood. What to do with those as well?
I have a cherry wood coffee table that I would like to paint as well as a cherry wood end table and standard wood end table. I want to paint them black to all match. People have told me to sand then primer then paint. Would it look better to stain them a dark color (black if possible) or paint them. What to do if I do either?

I suppose that the end tables are already painted? If not, you should paint them first with a “primer” (ask anyone at a paint store what primer is). Otherwise the new paint won’t stick.

It certainly won’t hurt to sand the tables before painting. What you want is a rough surface for the new paint to stick better. Sanding doesn’t have to be a big deal…just use some sandpaper to rough up the surface.

You can use a water-based (acrylic) paint or an oil-based paint. Water-based paint is easy to clean up, but doesn’t last as long and isn’t as shiny. Oil-based is a pain to clean up (might as well through the paint brush away rather than try to clean them!) One thing I’ve done in the past that worked well was to use spray paint. Spray paint is oil-based, so you get a durable, shiny finish and there’s no brushes to clean afterwards. Good luck!
